Synopsis

An age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry her father’s choice, the County Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse, the women arrange for the couple to marry the next day, but Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of Juliet’s own cousin, Tybalt, for which Romeo is banished. In a desperate attempt to be reunited with Romeo, Juliet follows the Friar’s plot and fakes her own death. The message fails to reach Romeo, and believing Juliet dead, he takes his life in her tomb. Juliet wakes to find Romeo’s corpse beside her and kills herself. The grieving family agree to end their feud.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

(Age and Gender can vary on roles)

Romeo
: Passionate, impulsive, and poetic. Falls in love at first sight and wears his heart on his sleeve. Moves between reckless joy and deep melancholy. Needs natural charm and emotional range. (Role requires staged intimacy with Juliet and has staged combat with Tybalt and Paris)

Juliet
: Bright, headstrong, and wise beyond her years. Grows from obedient daughter to fierce romantic in a short arc. Needs warmth, wit, and the ability to shift from playful to devastatingly earnest. (Role requires staged intimacy with Romeo, including several stage kisses. There also may be slight staged violence with Lord Capulet)

Mercutio
: Romeo's quick-witted, magnetic best friend. A brilliant joker whose wordplay hides real darkness. Needs huge energy, comic timing, and a sharp edge. (Role requires staged combat with Tybalt)

Benvolio
: Steady, loyal, and sensible. The calm eye of the storm who tries to keep everyone out of trouble. Needs warmth, good listening, and a supporting presence. (Role requires staged combat with Tybalt)

Tybalt
: Juliet's hot-tempered cousin. Prides himself on honor and dueling skill; hates all Montagues on principle. Needs coiled intensity, menace, and a voice that can turn silk to steel in a second. Also reads as a great swordsman. (Role requires staged combat with Benvolio, Mercutio and Romeo)

Capulet
: Juliet's father, a charming, generous host who turns controlling and terrifying when crossed. Believes he knows what's best for his daughter. Needs authority, warmth that curdles into menace, and a big emotional swing in the final act. (Role may require slight staged violence with Juliet)

Lady Capulet
: Juliet's mother, she is distant, formal, and dutiful. Marries young herself and expects Juliet to do the same without fuss. Needs cool elegance, restraint, and a hint of sadness beneath the surface.

Nurse
: Juliet's bawdy, loving confidante who is more of a mother to her than Lady Capulet is. Earthy, funny, and endlessly loyal, with a devastating grief at the end. Needs comic warmth, physicality, and real heart.

Friar Laurence
: The well-meaning priest who marries Romeo and Juliet in secret. Kind, thoughtful, and believes love can heal the feud. Needs gravitas, gentleness, and a touch of wry wisdom.

Paris
: A nobleman and Juliet's arranged suitor. Polite, proper, and genuinely fond of her. Needs charm, sincerity, and quiet dignity, especially in his final scene. (Role requires staged combat with Romeo)

Montague
: Romeo's father and Capulets' mirror image in the feud. Older, weary, and less present than his rival, but carries the play's final grief. Needs quiet authority and dignity.

Lady Montague
: Romeo's mother who is gentle, loving, and largely silent. Dies of grief offstage after Romeo's banishment. Needs warmth and stillness; small role, real presence.

Prince Escalus
: The ruler of Verona. He is weary of the feud and furious at its cost. Fair, stern, and commanding. His judgment frames the whole play. Needs authority, gravity, and presence.

Friar John
: The friar sent to deliver Romeo's letter

Balthasar
: Romeo's loyal servant who brings him the news of Juliet's "death" with honest grief.

Abraham
: A Montague servant in the opening brawl. (Role requires staged combat with Gregory and Sampson)

Sampson
: A Capulet servant. He is crude, boastful, and eager to fight. (Role requires staged combat with Abraham and Gregory)

Gregory
: Sampson's fellow Capulet servant and his straight man in the opening scene. (Role requires staged combat with Sampson and Abraham)

Peter
: The Nurse's servant and member of the house Capulet.

Page to Paris, Apothecary and Chorus
: Ensemble roles that help set the pace of the story and deliver information in crucial moments.
